Because during the month of May, Nurses Moving Forward celebrate Nurses’ Hands and Hearts, reprinted below is one of the many phenomenal submissions to the competition, which is about nurses’ hands. (Regretfully no author credit found, see link to document)
WHAT IF NURSES’ HANDS COULD TALK?
What if nurses’ Hands could talk?
Imagine the tales they’d tell!
The weird, the whacky, the wonderful – and the woeful as well.
They’d tell tales offending orifices that the outside world don’t know
Like stomas, sinuses and fistulae, oozing mysterious goo.
These nurses’ hands treat the wounds of a victim’s lacerations
while soothing the fears and lamentations caused by these vicious confrontations.
From grappling with dentures stuck in a mouth
to inserting suppositories way down south,
Nurses’ hands can deliver tiny babies
And have treated scabies, even rabies.
They comfort the poor and rich alike;
all are consoled whether sane or psych.
These hands relieve pain with touch, needle, and balm,
– ever comforting, ever calm.
The Murdoch press would love to talk to nurses’ hands, no doubt.
Tales in ‘The Sun’ would pack a clout from sordid details coming out
of the famous having tummy tucks or breast implants (“Not I”),
to addictive habits and toxic drugs sending them awry.
Artists may paint, sculptors may sculpt and piano players play.
But the nurses’ hands swab, bathe, soothe and heal
All in a single day
These precious hands God bless them all.
Applause, ring that bell!!
It’s sad that nurses’ hands can’t talk-
But lucky they cannot smell!!
Nurses Moving Forward encourages and supports creativity and innovation in nurses. Your work is about you. It is all about give-as-you-would-want-to-receive, reap-as-you-sow. You are your work. You become a better you the deeper you go into your work. That is different than being buried in work; drained stressed and fatigued. Your work becomes richer and more meaningful the more you put yourself in to it, if it is your calling.
You also get to know and express your diverse self through creative expression and hobbies. Nurses’ talent, education, virtues, personality and wisdom complement many other endeavors. We feel that you will be amazing at anything that you set your heart on because you are a nurse; a nurturer. Exploring your creative self will help you gain insights that may inspire you to places, jobs and opportunities that are your calling.
