Awards & Scholarships from AHNA

  • Charlotte McGuire Education Scholarship Program Undergraduate and Graduate Nursing StudentsThese awards are a monetary scholarship to members who are pursuing their nursing education. AHNA members enrolled in nursing programs at any level (ADN, BSN, MSN, PhD/DNS) or graduate programs that enhance the practice of holistic nursing may apply. These awards are worth $500 each. Criteria: Undergraduate Nursing Students Award To recognize and celebrate nurses in an undergraduate academic setting dedicated to a practice of holistic nursing.
    1. Current R.N. licensure
    2. Current active member of AHNA for a minimum of six (6) months
    3. Enrolled in an undergraduate academic setting dedicated to a practice of holistic nursing
    4. Ability to incorporate self-care into personal and professional life
    5. A demonstrated commitment to holistic nursing practice and its philosophical base

    Criteria: 

    Graduate Nursing Students Award

    To recognize and celebrate nurses in a graduate academic setting dedicated to a practice of holistic nursing.

      1. Current R.N. licensure
      2. Current active member of AHNA for a minimum of one (1) year
      3. Enrolled in a graduate academic setting dedicated to a practice of holistic nursing
      4. Ability to incorporate self-care into personal and professional life
      5. A demonstrated commitment to holistic nursing practice and its philosophical base
      6. Proven commitment to advancing Holistic Nursing using Leadership Skills.
    • Holistic Nursing Rising Star Award This award, established in 2014, is intended to recognize fresh new nurses who have dedicated themselves to a holistic path, have applied creative holistic practices and epitomize holism in their personal and professional lives. Criteria: To recognize and celebrate novice nurses dedicated to a path of Holistic Nursing who have implemented creative holistic practices and exemplify holism in their personal and professional life.
      1. AHNA active member for a minimum of two (2) years
      2. Implementation of creative holistic practices using an action plan that will change some aspect of nursing practices based on Holistic Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice Newly Revised 2nd Edition (2013)
      3. Exemplification of an enthusiastic endorsement of holistic nursing in a recent new holistic nurse

     Holistic Nurse of the Year (HNY) Award This award is to recognize AHNA members with outstanding innovation and/or a change in the field of holistic nursing. This award highlights nurses who have been working in Holistic Nursing for several years and have demonstrated a commitment towards Holistic Nursing’s Core Values. Criteria:To recognize outstanding current innovation and/or change in the field of Holistic Nursing.

    1. AHNA active member for a minimum of five (5) years
    2. Nomination by an AHNA Member
    3. Documented presence for Holistic Nursing with national activities
    4. A sustainable and current innovation and/or change in the field of Holistic Nursing for both healthcare professionals and consumers
    5. Evidence of the innovation and/or change currently practiced in the field of Holistic Nursing (i.e. published article, institutionalized program protocol)
    6. Currently acts as a definitive voice for AHNA in both their personal and professional life
    7. Demonstrates a commitment towards actualization of two AHNA Core Values in professional activitiesAny registered nurse who is an active member of AHNA is eligible to be nominated for the HNY Award, including all former Leadership Council/ Board of Directors and Past Presidents.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award This award is to celebrate outstanding lifetime achievement in the field of Holistic Nursing. It is a way of saying Thank You for all the holistic nursing work accomplished through sustained participation in AHNA and advancing the specialty practice of holistic nursing. Criteria: To recognize and say Thank You for their outstanding lifetime commitment and achievement in the field of Holistic Nursing.
    • Active member in AHNA for a minimum of five (5) years
    • Nomination by an AHNA Member
    • Documented presence in holistic nursing with activities at the National and/or International level
    • Documented sustained participation in the advancement of Holistic Nursing
    • Exemplification of the AHNA Core Values in their personal and professional life
    • Documented commitment to AHNA mission & goals
    • Documented activities of being a definitive voice for Holistic Nursing and healthcare
  • Excellence in Holistic Nursing Education Award   This award is intended to reward and recognize schools, programs, and departments of nursing that offer a degree in nursing that exhibit an exceptional, substantive and innovative curriculum in holistic nursing education. These schools have incorporated the philosophy and Core Values of Holism into their entire curriculum/course with innovative curriculum design, teaching, and evaluation methods, and encourage the highest standards of holistic nursing education. Criteria:
    To provide curriculum models of excellence that encourage the highest standards of holistic nursing education and to accord national recognition to those eligible schools and programs of nursing that exhibit an exceptional, substantive and innovative curriculum in holistic nursing education. 
    1. Incorporation of philosophy, competencies and core values delineated in the Holistic Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice 2nd Edition (2013), throughout the entire curriculum and/or into a stand-alone course
    2. Innovation of approaches to curriculum design, teaching and evaluation methods
    3. Clinical experiences across the care continuum focusing on the holistic nature and needs of people
    4. Potential for replication in, and dissemination to, other schools/programs/departments of nursing
    5. A fully accredited Nursing Program at the national level: NLNAC or AACN
    6. Nomination from an AHNA member
    7. Nomination from an individual outside the applicant’s organization
  • AHNA Service Award This award, established in 2014, recognizes and thanks AHNA member(s) who consistently contribute their experience and time to advance AHNA to its highest potential.  The winner of this award is committed to holistic nursing and its philosophy, and particularly AHNA’s mission and goals.
    Criteria:To recognize and thank AHNA member(s) who consistently contribute their expertise and time to advance AHNA to its highest potential.

    1. Active member in AHNA with current volunteer contributions to AHNA
    2. Nomination letter from an AHNA member with documentation of candidate’s
    3.  service to AHNA
    4. A demonstrated commitment to holistic nursing practice and its philosophical base
    5. The Story of Nurses Moving Forward

Sparked by a conversation between a diversely seasoned nurse and a nursing student that lead to more exciting chatter with other nursing students and colleagues. Then the realization that many nurses were asking the same questions:

  • ~ Why aren’t there any jobs?
  • ~ What’s happening in nursing?
  • ~ What can I do if I can’t get two (recent) years med-surg experience first?
  • ~ Not working as a nurse for 5 years negates my prior 15 active years, so I am not a nurse any more?
  • ~ Don’t we need more nurses?
