The First Annual Nurses Moving Forward Day!
May 10, 2015
- May was chosen because it is already associated with nurses.
- May is also associated with mothers and both are associated with caring.
- May is the 5th month. The number 5 can be associated with the energies of Freedom and Discipline.Ok, if you are starting to roll your eyes then just venture into this with an open mind, like it’s for entertainment purposes only!
So back to the number 5. Nurses have tradition (discipline): Florence Nightingale, the lamp, the creed and values from which they do their work. Energies or qualities can operate in balance or out of balance so to speak. The energies of 5 can swing from extreme dependence to independence, and from scattered to focused. So a healthy balance of the energy of 5 is using multifaceted talents in a focus way and applying discipline to achieve independence. - The number 1 can be associated with Creativity and Confidence. Likewise it’s energy has a range of expression. Ideally, it will express as feeling confident with self; channeling high energy and inspiration into creativity and service.
- The number 0 has qualities of Inner Gifts. When out of balance, hypersensitivity and internal confusion dominate. However, in balance, the manifestation is using the gifts of sensitivity, strength, expressiveness and intuition in service of others, for higher purpose.
- Added together, the sum is the number 6. Vision and Acceptance are the expressions. Ability to see the bigger picture, using forgiveness, diligence without perfectionism and acceptance of self and others.
5 + 1 + 0 = 6
(Discipline + Independence) + (Creativity + Confidence) +(Inner Gifts) = Vision + Acceptance
Can you see how it adds up? The people who are nurses use the wisdom, discipline from their roots and acceptance of the way of things. And with the focused intention of their diverse talents go foward with vision, creativity and confidence. When guided by their inner gifts toward achievement of independence in service of others with highest of purpose.
This sums, literally and mathematically, the essence of the virtues of the people who are nurses, the evolution of the profession and the potential for future growth, leadership, advocacy and innovation for nurses. This is what contributed to inspiring the development of Nurses Moving Forward. Supporting nurses who want to move forward personally in this “opportune moment of now”. Florence Nightingale was born May 12, 1820 and wikipedia describes her as a social reformer and statistician.
In a Jacksonville Florida news website article Gail Green, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside, said Nightingale’s numerous contributions to health care, nursing and society should not be forgotten.
“In recent years, Florence Nightingale’s amazing story doesn’t seem to garner the attention it deserves,” Green said. “Newer nurses sometimes are less aware of the remarkable nature of her accomplishments. Florence Nightingale was a true pioneer and a woman ahead of her time. In addition to being a caring, competent nurse, she was a statistician who showed us the importance of statistics in care management and improving conditions and recovery rates for patients.”
Nightingale and a team of nurses cared for injured British soldiers during the Crimean War. They so improved the unsanitary conditions at the British base hospital that the number of deaths was reduced by two-thirds. She was a social reformer whose written work and the results of her efforts triggered significant reforms in health care. During her lifetime she also established a hospital and a training school for nurses.
International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated around the world on 12 May of each year, to mark the contributions nurses make to society- International Council of Nurses . In an article on their blog, on May 4, 2015, this was said about International Nurses Day as the wrote:
