Writing Children’s Books: Why it’s harder than you thought with Bitsy Kemper

Summary: Everyone has a great idea for a children’s book. And with so few words, how hard can it be? That’s why some publishers get 10,000 submissions a year and may only publish 6. Learn the challenges of kidlit along with the joys, and how to get your first work a step ahead of the crowd.

Bio: Bitsy Kemper is author of 21 children’s books, from picture books to chapter books to YA. You may have seen her on CNN, heard her on CBS National Radio, or read her nationally-syndicated newspaper column (that also ran in the Bee). A recovering corporate marketing manager, she’s spent the past decade writing and raising her three children (four if you count her husband). Find out more at www.BitsyKemper.com

Editors note: Bitsy has also been heavily involved in the (International) Society of Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) www.scbwi.org and for several years, until 2019, was Regional Advisor (RA) of the North/Central California US Chapter of SCBWI, covering California from the Oregon border southward to Kings, Tulare & Inyo, and east to Lassen & Shasta Counties, just to name a few of the 35 of California’s 58 counties she was responsible for. (As an aside, the annual SCBWI’s 2020 Spring Spirit Conference will be 2 May 2020.)
